Compare companies

In this article, we will compare two crypto wallets from lauded cryptocurrency brands. One of them is Coinbase, a reputable company that offers numerous cryptocurrency-related services, including crypto wallets. Another brand is focused on the crypto wallet, and its wallet is one of the most trusted. The name of the brand is Metamask. We will compare both wallets by features, statistics, and other factors. Reading this article, you will see the key characteristics of both wallets and will be able to decide on which one (if any) fits your demands the best.

What Is Coinbase Wallet?

Coinbase is an American company launched in 2012. Coinbase offers several services. The brand is best known for its crypto exchange. Coinbase is the leading crypto exchange by market cap in the USA. It was the first big crypto company to go public on the US stock market. It happened in 2021. Coinbase wallet is the most accessible product of the Coinbase line. The wallet can be used in most of the world's countries while other Coinbase services are available only in several dozen jurisdictions.

Coinbase wallet is a self-custody (non-custodial) wallet meaning that the only person who can access your private keys is you. Coinbase wallet can store thousands of crypto tokens, including NFTs, and can be used for payments in decentralized applications (dApps) and on DeFi platforms. One of the special features of Coinbase Wallet is that it has an institutional-grade level of security. As Coinbase Wallet is a part of the Coinbase ecosystem, the wallet has smooth connectivity with the Coinbase exchanges and other products. The wallet exists in the form of a mobile app, web application, and browser extension.

What Is Metamask?

MetaMask is a hierarchical deterministic cryptocurrency wallet supporting the entire roster of Ethereum-based tokens. Networks supported on MetaMask include Binance Smart Chain, Avalanche, xDAI, Polygon, Fantom, Arbitrum, Harmony ONE, Cronos, Velas, and HECO. On top of that, this wallet supports Bitcoin, which makes MetaMask an easy choice for newbies. The tokens can be stored, swapped, sent, and received via MetaMask.

The wallet was launched in 2016 and quickly gained notoriety among crypto enthusiasts and professionals. MetaMask is considered to be one of the most convenient and easiest in use crypto wallets. It doesn't collect any user data. Passwords, private keys, and other data don't leave the wallet owner's device. The wallet is promoted as a key to the entire Ethereum ecosystem. The MetaMask team sees this wallet as a pass to web 3.0 where you can feel safe and free from the downsides of web 2.0. The wallet can be used by traders, developers, gamers, artists, and others.

Coinbase Wallet vs Metamask (details)

Platforms

MetaMask was struggling to provide a mobile app. However, in 2020, it became available. Now, both wallets support around the same number of formats and platforms. Both wallets offer branded browser extensions — that's quite a rare form of a crypto wallet/app.

Types of transactions

Both wallets can be used for the same basic transactions such as moving money in and out, storing them, and swapping tokens. DeFi and NFT markets connectivity make both wallets very modern and oriented at the latest market trends. We cannot say that one of the wallets outperforms the other by this factor.

Transaction fees

As for fees, MetaMask charges significantly lower fees. It's safe to say that MetaMask provides much more affordable service than Coinbase. In fact you can see that the fees on Coinbase are around 300% higher than on MetaMask. On Coinbase Wallet, you pay four times as much as on MetaMask.

Supported currencies

Coinbase wallet has a more diverse roster of supported tokens. It's better to say that nearly any worthy coin can be stored on Coinbase while MetaMask's list of supported coins is too focused on Ethereum-based projects. Of course, it is still hundreds of coins, but there are many great coins based on other networks. The good thing is that at least Bitcoin is still supported on MetaMask, which makes it much more attractive as Bitcoin is still the main attraction on the market.

Security features

Security-wise, Coinbase offers more options and protection layers. Coinbase is as safe as top banking institutions. For American users, their funds are insured. Cold storage and layers of encryption make Coinbase wallets hard to crack. More than that, accessing users' accounts is already a challenging task thanks to such a standard feature as 2fa. Interestingly, MetaMask doesn't support 2fa. The seed and secret phrases provide enough security. However, the browser extension version is at times criticized as not that safe. Some users complain that MetaMask is a bit buggy. Most MetaMask users complain about phishing attacks as the hacking of MetaMask is very hard. There are no records of MetaMask wallets being successfully hacked.

Custodial?

Both wallets don't collect users' private keys.

Payment methods

By this measure, Coinbase Wallet uncompromisingly outperforms MetaMask. It's more likely that you will find the preferred payment method among the supported payment methods on Coinbase rather than on MetaMask. The fact that Coinbase Wallet supports more mainstream coins makes it more accessible as you will have the ability to deposit some of the most popular coins.

Extra features

For the developers working with Ethereum, MetaMask is superior to Coinbase Wallet. The latter doesn't offer much compared to MetaMask. However, both wallets are decent in terms of being multi-functional.

Access

Both wallets can be used by the residents of more or less the same countries. It's hard to point out which of the wallets is more accessible.

Conclusion

Both wallets have a huge reputation and long history of use by people around the globe. Both wallets are trusted by millions; both are established names on the crypto market. In no way can we say that Coinbase Wallet should be preferred to MetaMask or vice versa. These wallets are rather for different types of people, for different needs or personal requirements.

While Coinbase is a product of a powerful international public company, MetaMask is a more low-key product. It is not backed by such huge resources as Coinbase. However, its design and functionality make it a strong rival. More usually, MetaMask gets compared with MyEtherWallet (MEW). In some instances, MEW is praised over MetaMask.

There are two groups of people who will probably prefer MetaMask: those who don't want to pay these hefty fees on Coinbase and developers working with Ethereum. Other possible pros of MetaMask are associated with its free spirit. The wallet website gives tips on bypassing the restrictions of using this wallet in sanctioned countries. It is hard to imagine that MetaMask would have banned its users' accounts in times of political tensions — that's something that Coinbase has already done.

Coinbase Wallet, however, has strong characteristics that make it more attractive for many people. The list of the supported tokens is more diverse. The protection measures are significant. The institutional support plays well for the funds' security as well. The rich choice of payment methods makes Coinbase an accessible gateway crypto wallet. The serious drawback is the commission's size. There are things to consider. Think hard before you decide on which wallet to use!
