Kaspa (KAS) is an open-source community-driven cryptocurrency launched in 2022. Kaspa uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism, meaning that the KAS coin can be mined. Aside from financial functionality Kaspa may be useful for the subnetwork support to make the layer 2 solutions more convenient.
Kaspa is characterized by unusually quick block-time. One block is confirmed every second. The speed is achieved via handling the problem of orphan blocks. Kaspa uses a GHOSTDAG protocol that doesn’t orphan blocks that were created simultaneously. Instead, it allows them to coexist without violating consensus. The Kaspa devs intend to increase the block confirmation speed in the future.
The key numbers for the Kaspa network revolve around the music theory numbers. For instance, the new token emission is arranged in accordance with the 12-note scale while the initial block reward was equal to 440 KAS where 440 is the frequency of the A4 note often used as an example for standard tuning, etc.
The project was conceived by Yonatan Sompolinsky, however, it is developed by the community members as it is an open source platform with no central authority and roadmap.
