MetaMask vs. Trust Wallet | Choose the Wallet that Fits You the Best

Сравнить компании

This article compares two popular wallets suitable for operations with Ethereum-based tokens. These wallets are Trust Wallet and MetaMask. Besides ERC tokens, both wallets support Binance Smart Chain tokens and several other types of cryptocurrency. From this article, you will learn the main characteristics and features of these multi-functional wallets and will be able to decide which one is the best option for you.

What Is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a multi-currency crypto wallet created in 2016 by Aaron Davis and Dan Finlay. Initially, it was suitable only for Ethereum tokens but later started to support other tokens. Please note that although MetaMask is a multi-blockchain wallet, it doesn't support Bitcoin.

The wallet is hierarchy-deterministic, meaning a new address is created per each transaction. This feature makes your transaction history nearly untraceable. However, each of your transactions can be easily tracked down individually if needed. More than that, MetaMask doesn't require user data. It makes the use of MetaMask private. You store your keys from your MetaMask account on your own.

On top of Ethereum-based tokens, MetaMask supports Binance Smart Chain tokens, Polygon-based tokens, and Avalanche-based tokens. You can store NFTs on MetaMask, too. You can add custom chains on MetaMask if you want to use smaller networks that collect negligible fees. By the way, MetaMask users can adjust gas fees to speed up transactions. Swaps require commissions, too. These fees range from 0.3% to 0.875%.

Apart from storing, receiving, and sending coins, MetaMask provides several other functions. For instance, you can stake coins you hold in the MetaMask wallet. Another notable feature is the token swaps.

You can install the MetaMask app on your mobile device (Android or iOS). Another variant of MetaMask is a browser extension.

Now, let's talk about the drawbacks. One of the most significant downsides of MetaMask is the inability to hold Bitcoin. Another problem is the lack of cross-chain bridging, meaning that the coins adapted for different blockchains will be treated as different currencies. As the wallet is secured only with passwords and a 12-word seed phrase, it is vitally important not to forget them. Unfortunately, if you forgot the password or the 12-word seed phrase, you won't be able to regain access to the funds stored on MetaMask. At times hackers gain control over users' MetaMask wallets via phishing technologies, malware, etc.

What Is Trust Wallet?

Trust Wallet is a multi-currency multi-functional crypto wallet created in 2017. It allows storing, receiving, sending, swapping, buying, selling, and staking cryptocurrencies. More than that, you can earn interest for the coins you hold in your wallet. Cryptocurrencies can be purchased via a bank card. On top of regular cryptocurrencies, Trust Wallet supports operations with NFTs and allows you to store them. The wallet supports Ethereum-based tokens, BNB chain tokens, and many others. Bitcoin is supported by Trust Wallet, as well.

You can store your private keys from Trust Wallet on your device. The wallet collects no user data. The funds are protected by a password and a seed phrase. Trust is an HD wallet (hierarchy-deterministic), so tracking your transaction history will be difficult for strangers. The wallet partners with Changelly, Coinbase, and ShapeShift, which allows users to trade their coins within the wallet interface. In 2018, Trust Wallet was acquired by Binance. Now, it is the official wallet for Binance DEX. What's especially great is that Trust Wallet doesn't collect any fees on top of gas.

Apart from functions related to digital finance, Trust Wallet provides the DApp Browser allowing access to decentralized apps right through the Trust Wallet app. It is an open-source Web3 browser, and dapps developers can list their products there freely.

MetaMask vs. Trust Wallet (details)

Platforms

MetaMask offers a more diverse set of platforms for the app. Indeed, it makes MetaMask much more convenient than Trust Wallet, which limits its users with mobile devices as the only way to access their wallets.

Types of transactions

Both wallets support multiple types of transactions and other actions. However, Trust Wallet seems to be a bit more diverse by this measure as it allows users to earn interest for the money they hold in Trust Wallet.

Transaction fees

Both wallets are not taking anything for transactions. All the commissions you pay are the miner fees (network fees).

Supported currencies

MetaMask is less versatile than Trust Wallet, for sure. Although both wallets support many coins and NFTs, MetaMask doesn't support such a crucial currency as Bitcoin. It is a serious drawback, making Trust Wallet a more convenient pick.

Security features

Security-wise, both wallets heavily rely on the user's ability to act wisely and not fall victim to phishing attacks, not compromise the device with the wallet app, and so on. MetaMask users have an advantage because MetaMask is compatible with hardware wallets; hence you can take the security of your funds to the next level.

Payment methods

Probably it's safe to say that Trust Wallet is handier than MetaMask in terms of available payment methods, as the former supports credit/debit cards. Nevertheless, we can state that both wallets provide enough payment methods, so you will find a way to buy crypto, whether you use Trust Wallet or MetaMask.

Extra features

Both wallets are multi-purpose. Trust Wallet is great for introducing a whole new space of dapps, such as the Dapps browser. Earning interest for the coins held in Trust Wallet is another vital feature of this wallet. Most of the extra features MetaMask has can be found in the list of the Trust Wallet features. So, features-wise, Trust Wallet is superior.

Access

As both wallets don't require any information about their users, they can be used worldwide.

By numbers, Trust Wallet is a winner in our comparison. However, we should never forget that these figures are not absolute. Each product is good or bad, depending on the end user's needs. For instance, if you want to have your wallet as a browser extension or if you're going to connect it to a hardware wallet, Trust Wallet will end up worthless, while MetaMask will be a better choice. So, see which of the highlighted features meet your requirements and decide which of the wallet fits you the best.

  1. What Is MetaMask?
  2. What Is Trust Wallet?
  3. MetaMask vs. Trust Wallet (table)
  4. MetaMask vs. Trust Wallet (details)
